Origin and History

Easter beginnings

Easter is a yearly commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus. As with Christmas celebrations, some Easter celebrations originated before Christianity. Eostre, said to be the name of the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, is where Easter derives its name. During the second century, Christians missionaries looking to convert pagans noticed that Easter was celebrated roughly the same time as pagan springtime celebrations and festivals. These springtime festivals mostly celebrated life's triumph over death. Eggs are often seen as symbols of new life and fertility. Rabbits are also seen as symbols of fertility, so eggs, rabbits and hares have gradually been included in the holiday symbolism.

Modern Celebrations

Easter eggs

Today, Easter is celebrated by Christians around the world. Some traditions celebrated include egg hunts, egg decoration, large meals and wearing new clothing. Unlike most other holidays, Easter is largely unaffected by mass commercialization and retains its religious origins and meaning.
